What is a Offer Letter?

An offer letter is a written extension of a job offer from an employer to a candidate. It documents the position, compensation, start date, reporting structure, and key conditions of employment — typically including at-will status, contingencies (background check, references), and any equity or bonus terms.

An offer letter is not the same as an employment agreement. The offer letter is shorter, focused on the headline terms a candidate accepts, and often references separate documents (employment agreement, IP assignment, NDA, equity grant) that the new hire signs at start. In many US states, the offer letter is the only written agreement — most employees are at-will.

Contract.DIY generates offer letters that include the right at-will language for your jurisdiction, the specific elements required by some states (paid time off accrual, sick leave notice, wage transparency), and clean equity/bonus language that doesn't accidentally promise things the company can't deliver.
