Common questions from videographers

Who owns the raw footage from my shoot?
By default, the videographer retains copyright over all raw footage. Your contract should explicitly state this and specify whether clients can request raw files (and at what cost). If a client requires raw footage ownership, this should be negotiated upfront and reflected in your price.
What should I do if a client wants changes beyond the agreed revision rounds?
Your contract should define exactly how many revision rounds are included and specify that additional revisions are billed at your hourly rate. Always document change requests in writing — email or a change order form — before doing the work.
How do I protect myself if a client cancels a wedding shoot last minute?
A non-refundable retainer (typically 25–50% of the total) is standard in the wedding industry. Your contract should also specify that the retainer is earned upon signing to compensate for holding the date, and outline rescheduling terms separately from outright cancellations.
Can I use client footage in my portfolio or reel?
Not without permission. Your contract should include a portfolio use clause granting you the right to use project footage for self-promotional purposes (demo reels, website, social media). Some clients — particularly corporate ones — will ask to remove this clause, which is fine if negotiated.
